How to Increase Low Milk Supply

April 12, 2024

As a new mother, one of the most common concerns you may face is low breast milk supply. While it can be a frustrating and stressful experience, there are several ways to help increase your milk production and ensure your baby is getting the nourishment they need.

  1. Nurse frequently: The more you nurse, the more milk your body will produce. Aim to breastfeed your baby every 2-3 hours, or on demand, especially during the first few weeks postpartum. This will help stimulate your milk production and establish a strong supply.
  2. Ensure proper latch: A proper latch is crucial for effective milk transfer and stimulating milk production. Make sure your baby's mouth is wide open, with their lips flanged out and their chin touching your breast. If you're experiencing pain or discomfort during nursing, seek help from a lactation consultant to ensure your baby is latching correctly.
  3. Offer both breasts at each feeding: Encourage your baby to nurse from both breasts at each feeding. This will help stimulate milk production in both breasts and ensure that your baby is getting enough hindmilk, which is the higher-fat milk that comes later in the feeding.
  4. Pump after feedings: After nursing your baby, use a breast pump to express any remaining milk. This will help stimulate additional milk production and increase your overall supply. You can also pump between feedings to maintain and boost your milk supply, especially if you're away from your baby or if they're not nursing as frequently.
  5. Stay hydrated and eat a balanced diet: Drinking plenty of water and eating a well-balanced diet can help support your milk production. Aim to drink at least 8 glasses of water per day and include a variety of nutrient-dense foods in your diet, such as leafy greens, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats.
  6. Consider galactagogues: Galactagogues are substances that can help increase milk production. Some common natural galactagogues include:
    1. Fenugreek: An herb that has been used for centuries to increase milk supply. It can be taken in capsule form or added to food.
    2. Blessed thistle: Another herb that can help boost milk production when taken in combination with fenugreek.
    3. Brewer's yeast: A nutritional supplement that is rich in B vitamins and can help support lactation.
    4. Oatmeal: Eating oatmeal regularly may help increase milk supply due to its iron content and other nutrients.
  7. Manage stress and get enough rest: Stress and lack of sleep can negatively impact your milk supply. Try to find ways to manage stress, such as practicing relaxation techniques, asking for help from family and friends, and prioritizing self-care. Aim to get as much rest as possible, napping when your baby naps and going to bed early.
  8. Avoid supplementing with formula: Unless medically necessary, try to avoid supplementing with formula, as this can decrease your milk supply. If you need to supplement, consider using a nursing supplementer system or a small cup or syringe to feed your baby the expressed breast milk.

Remember, every mother's breastfeeding journey is unique, and it may take some time to establish a strong milk supply. Be patient with yourself and your baby, and don't hesitate to reach out to a lactation consultant, midwife, or healthcare provider for support and guidance. With persistence and the right strategies, you can work towards increasing your breast milk supply and providing your baby with the best possible nutrition.
